World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth - Marvel Legend Stan Lee Gets Cameo

February 18, 2021

On November 12, 2018, Stan Lee passed away at the grand old age of 95. Needless to say, the death of the Marvel veteran did not go uncommented: Numerous fans commemorated their idol on social media and shared their stories with other mourners. The developer team at Blizzard has now also reacted and honored Stan Lee in the MMO World of Warcraft in its very own way.

A new character has appeared on the World of Warcraft test server in the Alliance capital of Stormwind. As Twitter user BS_Schouten correctly pointed out, the scrawny human Stanley is a cameo of famous Marvel veteran Stan Lee, who passed away last November at the age of 95.

Here, Stan Lee - or rather Stanley - wears a noble suit of Alliance armor. You can find the character model on the PTR in Stormwind
In a video of the internet platform Wowhead you can see Stanley wandering through Stormwind. Starting at minute 00:35 he greets a town guard with Stan Lee's famous bon mot "Excelsior!". Two other character models, in which Stanley is dressed in civilian clothes and as a Hordler, respectively, suggest that the Marvel legend will not be affiliated with any particular faction. So far, however, only the Alliance figure has been spotted on the PTR.

Blizzard's Cameo Squad
Stan Lee is far from the only celebrity to be honored with a post-mortem World of Warcraft cameo. You can also find NPCs in Azeroth commemorating the late actors Robin Williams and Farrah Fawcett, as well as several former Blizzard employees. An overview of the in-game memorials can be found here.

An eternal legend
Stan Lee, meanwhile, may very well be pleased with his tribute. After all, the former comic book writer - who went down in Marvel history as the co-creator of Hulk, Iron Man and the X-Men, among others - is known for his cameo appearances in various superhero movies and video games, such as the latest Marvel's Spider-Man. In the future, we can probably even look forward to more cameos, after all, Marvel Studios had announced shortly after Lee's death that they still have a few scenes with Lee up their sleeve.
